The Dyson DC28 is a bagless vacuum designed for households with pets and consumers generally agree that it does indeed do a very good job at picking up pet hair. It comes with all the typical Dyson features such as no loss of suction over time, washable filters, bagless design and a 5 year warranty. If there is any issue with this machine it might be the weight. It is not a lightweight upright and some consumers feel the weight can make it a little unwieldy.

The vacuum is powered by a 12 amp motor producing 245 air watts of suction and it uses Root Cyclone technology. Root Cyclone technology, according to Dyson, provides constant suction (does not drop over time) and it also eliminates clogging. In addition, it limits exposure of the filters to debris thereby keeping them cleaner longer. The filters on this machine are washable and reusable.

The DC28 Animal comes with HEPA level filtration and the vacuum is certified asthma and allergy friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. HEPA is a high level of filtration that removes very small particles from the airflow (99.97% of all particles 0.3 microns or larger). This generally eliminates the likes of pollen, dust mites, pet dander, etc. and HEPA filtration is an often sought after feature in vacuum cleaners today.

An interesting feature on the DC28 is the Airmuscle technology. This uses a pneumatic actuator to pull the vacuum head deeper into carpet as well as a cam and a clutch to optimize brushbar performance. This is said to enable the system to better remove dirt and hair from dirty carpets. Many owners indicate that this technology is quite effective and is not a gimmick. Indeed consumer comments regarding this machine’s ability to remove pet hair from carpet are mostly very encouraging. Some owners indicated that they had used the DC28 to go over areas of carpet just cleaned with their old vacuum and the amount of pet hair and debris it picked up was nothing short of astonishing. The flat out head is a special low profile vacuum head for getting under low furniture. A telescopic wand also comes with the DC28 and extends a full 16 feet. The unit contains on-board tool storage as well.

Other vacuum cleaner features include a large 5/8 gallon clear-plastic dirt canister, a lengthy 35.2 foot power cord, and a motorized brushbar that can be started or stopped via fingertip controls. The Dyson DC28 has a 13.5 inch cleaning path so a fair area is covered with each pass. It should also be noted that this is a fixed wheel vacuum cleaner and it does not use Dyson’s famous ball means of movement.

Consumers indicate they are pleased with many aspects of the DC28 Animal including its very long power cord, range of useful attachments, washable filters and powerful suction. They also like its effectiveness on both carpet and hard surfaces and, possibly most of all, its ability to pull up pet hair. A large percent of consumer comments allude to the DC28’s exceptional ability to clean pet hair from carpeted areas.

However it should be noted that some owners express displeasure with the vacuum due to its weight which is slightly over 20 lbs. Others find the wand awkward to use and the vacuum, while good, to be quite expensive. Typical retail pricing for the Dyson DC28 Animal ranges between about $500 and $600 and it carries a 5 year parts and labor warranty.

The DC28 is clearly very good for households with pets and if one can afford it, it is likely one of the best pet hair vacuums on the market today. However there are less expensive yet still capable pet hair vacuums available as well.
