Are you constantly plagued with a smelly vacuum cleaner? It is actually normal for a cleaner to stink. After all, it is used to pick up dirt, bacteria and other unnameable micro organisms.

Maintaining your vacuum cleaner is a constant process. You would want to regularly check the parts if they are working properly. However, if you want to keep it fresh-smelling all the time, here the tips that will prove useful to you:

1. Clean the attachments

Fill up a bucket with warm water and add a cup or two of Lysol. Soak the attachments of your cleaner for about 15 minutes. They should be disinfected in no time. After the allotted time, remove the attachments and let them dry properly.

2. Clean the brush roll

Many people complain that their vacuum machine smells like their dog. If you have pets at home and you use this cleaning machine to pick up pet dander, it will surely stink like your pet. Try cleaning the brush roll. Remove collected pet hair. Remove the brush roll from the machine and soak it in soapy water. Use a soft-bristled brush to get rid of stubborn hair. Let it dry completely before installing it back to your cleaning machine.

3. Avoid picking up spilled liquid and food

They can turn rancid in your fridge. You would always want to pick up dry dirt. Wipe the floor first with damp cloth to get rid of the spill. After doing so, wipe it again with dry cloth. Resume vacuuming the floor to remove collected dirt particles.

4. Don’t forget to discard dirt in the bag

If you are using a bagless cleaner, it should be no trouble to dispose the bag. But if you are using a bagged vacuum cleaner, you should take responsibility in remembering when to dispose the contents of the dirt receptacle. Some people store their cleaner in the attic or in the garage and they just remember to remove the contents of the dirt receptacle when it is already starting to smell funny. When this happens, remove the remaining dirt and clean the receptacle.

5. Use home-made vacuum fresheners

To freshen up your smelly machine, try using fabric conditioner sheets. Crumple it and throw it inside the bag or the dirt receptacle. You can also soak a piece of wax paper in lavender essential oil. Let it soak for about 15 minutes. Hang it up to dry. Place the scented wax paper in the filter compartment of the machine.
